'Experience the best of the Territory'

Chief Minister's Message

I was a skinny, newly-arrived kid from Tennant Creek when I rolled into my first Royal Darwin Show.

I remember the colours, the carnival jingles from the sideshows, the laughter, showbags and strange, new fried foods (at least they were to me then).

Most of all, I remember the sense of unabashed joy.

I’ve visited countless shows up and down the Territory in the near three decades since, and these days I have a lot more on my plate, but that same feeling creeps back each time I step through the gates into the smiling and humming melee.

This feeling no longer stems from the anticipation of the rides, or what I might find in my showbag, but from the easy delight of community, friendship and family (and, let’s be honest, the Chung Wah sate).

I know it isn’t just me. For 66 years the Royal Darwin Show has been drawing Territorians from toddlers to grandparents because it is here, in one place, you find our best.

Here you take a break from the rush, laugh with your kids and enjoy your neighbours.

From the cake stalls and quilt makers; the poultry and the herd; the rides and the games, nothing showcases our unique community or brings people from all ages and backgrounds together quite like the Royal Darwin Show.

I am loving this year’s theme – the year of the rooster - and I congratulate and thank the Royal Agricultural Society of the NT for what I know will be another spectacular event.
