The 2016 Public Housing Garden Competition – Top End region is now open.
This year the Department of Housing is pleased to partner with the Royal Darwin Show.
The competition is an opportunity for tenants to showcase their gardens and have their enthusiasm and hard work recognised. The competition has been running for over 30 years and each year judges are impressed by tenants’ creativity, care and green thumbs.
- Best Balcony, Small Space or Pot Garden
- Best Native, Sustainable or Water Wise Garden
- Best Edible Garden
- Best Colourful Garden
- Best Community Garden*
Entrants may nominate in a maximum of two categories.
Gardens will be judged on:
Presentation and general appearance – The garden is well-presented and maintained. Plants appear healthy and thriving. There are no obvious weeds, lawns are edged and rubbish is removed.
Layout and design – The garden is an organised retreat that offers a feeling of calmness and relaxation. Paths are well-placed, and natural features are used to advantage. The garden compliments the space/area it occupies.
Plantings – The garden has good use of colour, shape and variety. It provides year-round interest and scent and contributes to the surrounding environment and streetscape.
Environmental consideration – Water smart initiatives have been introduced to reduce water use, retain moisture and reduce evaporation. The garden encourages wildlife (birds, bees, earth worms and frogs), uses native and local plant species and excludes weeds. The garden is easily maintained with minimal environmental footprint including water and pesticides.
Creativity, originality and passion – The garden offers a true reflection of the Territory’s unique lifestyle. It is creative, different or unusual and shows the effort, enthusiasm and knowledge of the gardener.
Collaboration (Best Community Garden only) – There is clear evidence that tenants work together to plan, designate responsibility, manage the upkeep, and share the rewards of the garden.
